Women in Tech – AWS – Tech Week Initiative

As part of Tech Week, AWS (Amazon Web Services) have developed an event, Women in Tech, a three-day initiative across three months to develop and hone the leadership skills & soft skills of the participants.

This event is open to all women above the age of 18 and especially useful for college students, recent graduates and early stage professionals in technology. The series will be held in the Amazon office, Burlington Road, Dublin  4.

Below is the overall schedule spanning three days over three months (Mar – May, 2019)

14 Mar, Thursday:

Arrive at 9:00 am – Light refreshments, meet & greet, casual networking and settle into the training room

9:45 am to 12:45 – Ice breaker, discussion on global research around women in workplace and engaging discussion/ group work around the research and how it applies in the work/social context. This is going to be an engaging session and requires the participants to participate actively in the discussion and presentation. The participant will leave the session with heightened self- awareness and tips on being effective in interpersonal interactions.

12:45pm – 1:30pm – Lunch and networking

1:30 pm – 3:00pm – Life of an employee! A practical shadowing opportunity for those who would like to see what it is like to be at work. The participants can ask questions and interact with their Amazon buddy. Each Amazon buddy will have 2-3 participants depending on the size of the group.

3:00 – 4:00pm – Debrief

4:00pm – Depart from Amazon

19 April, Friday

Arrive at 9:00 am – Light refreshments, meet & greet, casual networking and settle into the training room

9:45 am to 1:00 pm – Conflict Management Workshop. The workshop is based on Thomas Kilmann’s research on different conflict management styles. The participants will leave the session with awareness on their preferred style and how they can flex their style to be successful in interpersonal relationships.

1:00 – 2:00pm – Lunch and networking

2:00 – 4:00pm – Communication Styles Workshop. The session will enable participants explore different communication styles and share feedback in a constructive manner.

4:00 – 4:30pm – Debrief / Video Recording

4:30pm – Depart from Amazon

 

20 May, Monday

Arrive at 9:00 am – Light refreshments, meet & greet, casual networking and settle into the training room

9:45 am to 1:00 pmThe participants are asked to complete the Gallup’s StrengthsFinder Assessment and bring a copy of their report. During the session they will learn about their strengths and how to leverage their strengths for their success in life.

1:00 – 2:00pm – Lunch and networking

2:00 – 4:00pm – Creating a Leadership Brand. This workshop allows the participants to realize the power of their individual brand and how they can be more intentional about creating their leadership brand.

4:00 – 4:30pm – Debrief

4:30pm – Depart from Amazon

Q. Can the participant attend any one day of the training program instead of all the three?

All the three days of soft skill/ leadership skills build on each other. The participants will benefit the most if they attend all the three sessions and participate in the experiential skill building activities.

Register for the National Scratch Competition!

Preparations for the 2019 National Scratch Competition are well underway and looks like it’ll be better than ever with the recent launch of Scratch 3.0.

Would-be participants can register their projects online at scratch.ics.ie for the competition with entries to be submitted by 1st March 2019. The finals will be held in University of Limerick during Tech Week, 11th-17th May 2019.

Scratch 3.0 includes dozens of new sprites, a totally new sound editor, and many new programming blocks and with Scratch 3.0, you are able to create and play projects on your tablet, in addition to your laptop or desk computer. Here’s an FAQ on Scratch 3.0.

In operation since 2010, the National Scratch Competition has established itself among both teachers and students as a leading platform and showcase for Ireland’s aspiring digital creators.

Women4IT Launch Event in Brussels

YOUNG-ICT WOMEN, the first project signed under the EEA and Norway Grants Fund for Youth Employment, officially launched on 12 December 2018 in Brussels.

The “YOUNG-ICT WOMEN – Innovative Solutions to Increase the Numbers of EU Vulnerable Girls and Young Women into the Digital Agenda” project (Project Nr. 2017-1-094 under the leadership of the Latvian Information and Communication Technologies Association), Women4IT in short, is implemented by nine partners from nine European countries:

  • Latvian Information and Communication Technologies Association (LIKTA);
  • Baltic Education Technology Institute (BETI, Lithuania);
  • Creative Thinking Development (CRETHIDEV, Greece);
  • DIGITALEUROPE (Belgium);
  • ECDL Ireland (ICS, Ireland);
  • Educating for an Open Society (EOS, Romania);
  • European Centre for Women and Technology (ECWT, Norway);
  • Fundacion Plan International (PLAN, Spain);
  • Malta Communications Authority (MCA, Malta).

Women4IT´s aim is to develop digital competences and thereby the employability of young women (15 – 29 years of age) at risk of exclusion from the labour market as well as to provide innovative solutions to increase the number of young women with ICT careers and women participating in the digital economy. The project, funded by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, through the EEA and Norway Grants Fund for Youth Employment, benefits from a 2.714.304€ grant and runs from September 2018 until August 2021.

Project partners will assess the digital skills of 1.000 women and, in collaboration with employers, train 700 of them. The initiative will pursue its goals through awareness raising, skills assessment, innovative partnerships with employers, through the development of a new on-line employability profiling tool, and through training and guidance towards employment in digital jobs.

Today’s “Releasing Women’s Potential for the Digital Economy – Women4IT” launch event was hosted by DIGITALEUROPE. Policy makers, leading representatives of the digital economy ecosystem represented in Brussels, the funders of the EEA and Norway Grants Fund for Youth Employment, and representatives of the media all had a chance to discuss the issue of diversity and gender equality in the tech sector.

On behalf of the Commission, Vessela Karloukovska, Policy Officer, Digital Economy and Skills, DG CNECT, addressed over 70 participants at the event.

Mara Jakobsone, Project Manager of Women4IT, presented the project’s objectives, timeline and first findings. Summarising the importance and expected impact of the project, Ms. Jakobsone stressed:

Based on an assessment of 150 effective and innovative ICT training programmes we have seen that only one in three graduates in STEM and one in six ICT specialists is a woman, tech entrepreneurs are five times more likely to be men than women. 

At the same time, according to the World Economic Forum reports, by 2020, for every digital job created, four traditional jobs will be displaced for a man – but 20 will be displaced for a woman.

The Women4IT project partnership will address these challenges and develop and test innovative training tools with 700 women and will build new partnerships (European and national) for supporting the access to the labour market for young women, and for the diverse population in general, in 7 countries.

Several project partners (ECWT, PLAN, MCA and ICS) contributed to two panel discussions, which highlighted the European state of the art with regard to women´s employment in ICT and STEM careers, together with examples of increasing the number of women in digital careers with the involvement of leading representatives from Microsoft, CISCO Iberia, Fujitsu, Oracle Academy, CEPIS, ALL DIGITAL, STEM Alliance and Women@EIT Community

Tech Week 2017 draws to a close – many thanks!

As Tech Week 2017 has drawn to a close, we’d like to take the opportunity to say a big thank you for getting involved. We had a blast and learned a lot; we hope you and your students did too!

We’d love to know how you got involved and what you thought of Tech Week 2017, so we’ve created a quick two minute ‘Event Holders Debrief and Evaluation’. We’ll use the information to measure engagement around the country and incorporate your feedback and suggestions into making next years’ Tech Week even better.

We’re now looking into the participation and engagement and so far it looks like our best year yet!

Wednesday saw the Scratch Finalists make their way to the Kemmy Business School in University Limerick for the Scratch National Final. 30 of the top scoring teams across the categories qualified and were invited to show their mettle to the judges.
