  • Budding young engineers receive FIRST PLACE award for their Core Values at the First Lego League UK and Ireland Finals and are representing Ireland at the World Championships in Detroit USA

    Event Type: Awards Ceremony

A team of young children from Wicklow Montessori Primary School have been awarded first place for their core values at the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s (IET) FIRST® LEGO® League UK and Ireland competition. The event was the largest ever FIRST® LEGO® League UK and Ireland final with over 500 young people. The IET run this science and technology challenge, which is aimed at 9-16 year olds and tasks teams to build a robot to tackle a series of missions, and create an innovative solution to a real world problem. This year’s HYDRO DYNAMICS challenge is all about water – how we find, transport, use, or dispose of it. The winning team – Airbots – is made up of Mya Neiland, Hugo Sloan- Kelly, Kiah Savage, Cillian Findlay-Byrne, Anna Mooney, James Grant, Lucy Mc Cann and Senan Sloan-Kelly. The children are 11 and 12 years of age and are in 6th class. The children were the overall winners at their regional competition in Galway at the beginning of February and competed in the UK and Ireland Finals in Bristol on the 24th of February where they were crowned first place in the Core Values category of the competition. They will now represent Ireland on the global stage when they attend the FIRST® LEGO® League World Festival in Detroit, USA in two weeks time. The team Airbots impressed the judges with their robotics skills, as well as their project, which is how we can reuse water wasted at airport security more efficiently. They also had to work on their core values and code and build a robot to complete various different tasks.
